economic lesson of 2008

This article titled "The Worst Predictions About 2008" could be a warning to greed, or those who think they have tools to predict and play god:
http://www.businessweek.com/bwdaily/dnflash/content/dec2008/db20081224_028134.htm

I guess the market works because there are always people who think they could beat the system.
I wonder if any columnist or staff writer made any "way-off" during 2008 as well?

Hôtel de glace

Christmas and Environmental Protection

So with Christmas around the corner, do you think about the carbon emission increased, indirectly of the extra food or products consumed? For example the CO2 emission from shipping some exortic delicacy across the Pacific Ocean? For Hong Kong, I guess it is the lightings - from the skycrapers dotting both sides of the Victoria Harbour to just ordinary residential or commercial buildings in your neck of the woods. We better catch up before the whole of China has that kind of light pollution like in Hong Kong. You don't believe it? The pics in this post are taken in Beijing, and these installations are growing everywhere.

Extra: my enviromentally unrelated blog entry on Christmas.

Ciclo Colombiano

So I was supposed to watch another film in the European Film Fest. However there were so many people that by the time I arrived all the free passes were gone. I put my name down on the waiting list but went immediately instead to the 3rd Colombian Film Season (dunno really how to translate into English, well you can see the logo attached).

It was a film, quite harliriously titled La ministra inmoral (Immoral Minister). Its elements were quite sterotypically South American - sexy women, casanova type men, sex, violence, etc. I thought I was watching soap on Telemundo back in New York City hahaha. The representative (probably from the Colombian Embassy) was very courteous and spoke Mandarin. What foreigners who worked long enough in Beijing would NOT speak Mandarin anyways? They don't want to be uncool hahaha. With the screenings, it is a good way for Beijingers to get a glims of the country literally half a world away, though the imageries and perceptions might be distorted a little.

(photo credit: chelseacharliwhite)

So another conference I attended, this tme with a professor at the famous Sciences Po . It was an interesting talk because the speaker had training in philosophy and did research on anthropology and has been looking at the intersection of the above disciplines with science. It really brings back to my days of taking philosophy courses at Stony Brook. The topic is strange for me, for I ain't no academic nor am I well-read in philosophy. I hardly scratched the surface of that field as an undergrad. However, if only people interested and who understand this kinda difficult discourse can put it in layman's terms for the general public, perhaps it would just able to help lessen or prevent some of the messes coming out of the current financial crisis, such as the massive Ponzi-styled fraud, of all people, a former director of NASDAQ Bernard Madoff... yikes! It reminds me of Henry George too, do we REALLY have progess, then why do we still have poverty?

While I was researching online for Bioinformatics stuff, I came across the Sept 2008 issue of Nature with a catchy title - Science in the petabyte era. I remember writing some essays, when I was a kid in secondary school, for several U.S. college entrance applications, in which I used, dunno if I coined LOL, the term "knowledge explosion". I guess the trend has continued. Nature remained us Google celebrated its ten anniversary this year. Biology, biological sciences, etc. - similar entities to the layperson unless you work in the specific fields - have been evolving from purely descriptive science to more and more quantitative disciplines such as bioinformatics, genomics, proteomics, etc. Biological processes, molecular compounds can now be more mathematically described or tracked. Back when I was an undergrad, circa early 1990s, many of the fields did not take any shape yet. Certainly a lot has changed over twenty years. At one point, I wanted to pursue a Master degree in Bioinformatics. Now, however, it will be extremely fascinating to stay on as an informed amateur, to witness the changes these computational, as well as the traditional biochemical tools coming to play and create knowledge and discoveries.

60e anniversaire de la...

déclaration des droits de l'homme.
(60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights)

I had the opportunity to watch three documentaries:
La Liste de Carla - on the former prosecutor of International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY)

Un abolitionniste - The French Justices Minister Robert Badinter, when death penalty was abolished in that country.

Un coupable idéal - a murder case concerning a white victim and a 15-year old black youth wrongfully accused.

I named the films in increasing level of personal interest. Three documentaries and three entirely different topics at individual, regional, national and international level. We are still living in an imperfect world. At times, even international efforts, or the lack of, as in the case of the ICTY, cannot bring justice to past wrongs. As with many other social justice issues, such as environment, it takes organisation, mobilisation and education at local level to achieve a fairer society for all.

Check out the office of the Higher Commissioner of Human Rights, if that interests you.

On second thought, I think globalisation and borderless markets and business opportunities bring out challenges that aren't discussed when we talk about human rights. What about the children working in the developing world to churn out your Christmas toys and gifts that you give to your kids and friends? Or did you ever wonder why stuff are so cheap at the dollar store? There is the market in demand, even with the current financial crisis, and the supply of labour. The topic does go beyond death panalty, torture, etc. the obvious to more subtle areas.

China, a hot zone whenever people talk about human rights, will face its own challenges, as mentioned in the Chinese edition of the Wall Street Journal.

Hong Kong Jockey Club

Ahh... the club house of Hong Kong Jockey Club in Beijing, just East of WangFuJing王府井. My late night discovery as I was walking to a friend's home last weekend. It looks new and like a hotel. And it has Christmas lightings too!

European Film Fest

Christmas in Beijing / Noël à Pékin

Well, if you walk around town, at least the CBD or more of the area inside 2nd ring road, you will notice more and more tell-tale signs of the holiday season (in Western or American terminology, since it is not quite a holiday in mainland China). Notwithstanding, businesses, especially hotels and restaurants are more than happy to embrace it.

more Buñuel

Apart from my earlier entry on Las Hurdes. I watched a few Buñuel flicks lately. One of them was Un Chien Andalou, which after the second or third viewing, I still cannot make out of every message the film meant to convey. Do I really have to "understand" what the film director intended for us to see, given the name Luis Buñuel equates surrealism? I have heard more than once that movies, when compared to books, make people dumber because the former is "fed" to the audience, whilst reading a book allows room for individual interpretations. Well, An Andalusian Dog really leaves us lots of room to dream on. It is entertaining to say the least!

In addition, I watched Viridiana, a film now I know why the Catholic church wanted it banned when it was released in France and Spain (don't know if it ever got to the Spanish market right the way, for from what I read it was banned in Spain for more than a few years).

Train killed the bus

So a bus route that sort of grew up with me, or vice versa is no more. Blame it on the increasing fast pace of city life in Hong Kong. The trip on No. 70 has a lot of personal spin to it. In the past my family, more often my father and I would ride from terminus to terminus (Jordan Road in Kowloon and Sheung Shui in the New Territories). Withchanging pace in Hong Kong at lightning speed, it is actually quite amazing the No. 70 bus survived so long. When I was studying in Mong Kok and living in Sheung Shui from 1984 to 1987, I took the bus sometimes, just for the fun of it, even though the train would get me home in like 40 minutes. In the very old days, early 1980s in Sheung Shui, buses arriving would have to turned onto the opposite lane and back into the "parking lot" which looked more like just a dirt pit, as it wasn't even paved with cement.

I guess the bus route witness the changing of population density, neighbourhoods, sceneries, etc. I always thought it was the longest bus route in Hong Kong, the trip itself was something, not quite a pilgrimage, but long, taking at times one and a half hours with traffic LOL. Now that it had served it purpose, like many aspects of life Hong Kong, exists only in our memories and contributes to the ever growing nostalgia. Some blog pictures on the buses are here.

Improv, Beijing style

I went to this funky party last Saturday in a warehouse on 王庄路 Wang Zhuang Lu in Beijing's WuDaoKou district, a primarily university district. The warehouse seems to be a 武术学校 (school of Wushu) during the day. Alors cette soirée me démontrait que ma théorie reste correcte - je peux améliorer mon français bien que j'habite à Pékin, grâce aux francophones qui s'installent ici, temporairement ou à long terme.
There were DJs playing music, graffiti artists spray-painting the wall, people busying barbequing, eating and drinking. Interestingly, I dunno if I were the only one noticing, a few mingong not associated with the party actually sneeked in and out of the premise a few times. Things happened at these kidna evnets you know. The bottom line was everyone had a hell of a good time without any ruckus!

rencontre sur Simone de Beauvoir 西门。波娃

journée de SIDA / AIDS day / 艾滋病日

I also wrote a piece in English and French for cityspk, click here.

siege in Mumbai

one of the points of view on the issue, from Deepak Chopra

Brazil visa free!

So I am elated that I could take my Hong Kong SAR passport and visit Brazil visa-free, a feat that I cannot achieve with my Canadian passport, nor could any American visit Brasil as freely as a Hong Kong citizen hahaha. I think Brazil will keep photographing the Americans coming in for now, apart from reuquesting them for visas, just the simple an eye for an eye kinda equal opportunity! The world will only be equal when people all travel without visas or all travel with visas. The Indian government is treating pretty much everyone quite equally, for most foreigners need a visa to go there, and vice versa for Indian citizens. As we are far from the all-or-nothing visa equality, we are far from the utopian equality that everyone is equal, which sadly, perhaps will never be achievable.

faking it big time, national problem?

I was reading this article in Chinese, and was really upset regarding the cheating of these supposedly university students. Criticising the mainland is something I try to refrain from, or even persuade the people around me to do the same, since it is still a developing country and we shouldn't be too harsh on it. However, there are at times the integrity of society-at-large would be affected, or has been for years. I was listening to RFI's mandarin newscast the other night with the staggering figure of 800 billion RMB being the amount "stolen" by the over 20000 government officials and smuggled overseas. I do believe the central government has to come up with something to stop these kind of "bleeding" for the 800 billion could feed a few people already!

On an unrelated new story, as I was sohuing (i.e. using sohu.com), I came across this advertisement (screen shot attached)
. Look carefully at the lower left hand corner, the bold headed figure should ring some bells to whomever watches American TV. It is Dr. Phil the TV talk show host. And you know what the caption reads on the website of this English course advertised? He "became" a Briton working for the Department of Education as a "secretary of languages", yea that's the awkard translation of his fake title in Chinese. How many potential students of that website are gullible, I wonder?

Lamma Island, Hong Kong

It was really nice to be on Lamma Island, Hong Kong. I swam for the first time in the ocean in Hong Kong in 20 years! And to top it off, it was a late summer-like day on Halloween! Believe it or not, it was also my first visit to the island. Although it is the third largest island in Hong Kong (after Lantau and Hong Kong Islands), its population is considerably smaller, even compare to the small but densely packed Cheung Chau (长洲). My friend and I went swimming in Lo So Shing beach, around 30 to 40 min walk from Sok Kwu Wan (SKW), where we got off the ferry. There are many seafood restaurants and a Tin Hau Temple (as usual for any coastal village).

Since we went on an October Friday, we almost owned Lo So Shing beach (LSS) to ourselves, apart from a few French Canadian toursists, who were quite uncomfortable after knowing we spoke French hahaha. We stayed and chatted on LSS until 5ish, which was a bit late since we did not know the trek up Northwest to Yung Shue Wan would be more than an hour, and it was getting dark really quickly. (to be continued - published in preliminary version - not finished yet)

Second punch of American bashing, this time coming from a Canadian news article quoting United Nations statistics. The Vancouver Sun reported several American cities have economic inequality levels similar to those of developing countries. For folks interested in social determinants of health, this might also be the entry point to look at population health with regard to economic inequality. I am quite upset, on the other hand, to find out my beloved hometown of Hong Kong is the most economically bifurcating city in Asia, something that I would not brag about!

Asian diversity

I watched by chance a broadcast of "Dialogue" a CCTV English Channel programme on ATV International / TVB Pearl during the wee hours in Hong Kong. I am AMUSED and AMAZED by the comments of Kishore Mahbubani, former Singaporean Ambassador to UN and Wu Jianmin, former Chinese Ambassador to France on a few issues such as diversity, cooperation, financial crisis. They hit the bull's eye in mentioning how Europeans, North Americans and Asians view and point or not point their fingers when crisis occur. Maybe it is not the Asians who need to be better listeners LOL...

trop d'élections 太多選舉 too many elections!

Go and long live Ocean Park, the homegrown Hong Kong theme park! hahaha! They are building a hotel on the site I believe, and god forbid what kinda multi-national chain are they bringing it? Oh well...

回到一個從未住過的家 returning to a home I've never lived

Well technically I did not lie because it is the ancestral home of my paternal heritage. In the older days, my home return permit (回鄉證) actually had city of 福州(Fuzhou) written as my "huji" (戶籍)or "zaoji"(早籍). I do not have too much of an emotional attachment since my father has not visited Fuzhou himself, though he has been in other places in Fujian province. He and I were both born in Hong Kong or its vicinity. I was quite elated to be there. Yes it was root searching. It wasn't a place so far from Hong Kong yet it was quite far, spiritually or emotionally, for a lack of better word.

I know my aunt (my father's elder sister), uncle (her husband) and other uncles on my father's side speak Fuzhou hua (福州話). My grandmother used to make 燕皮雲吞(yanpi yuntun)and I also ate 福州魚丸(Fuzhou yuwan) as a kid. Or, when I was in Chinatown of New York City, a stroll on East Broadway 東百老匯街would immerse myself in the incomprehensible Fuzhou hua. For I am one of them. I wished I could "connect" with them. Perhaps someday when I dig out a book on閩東 方言 Mindong dialect from the National Library of China. It is a doable wish haha.

saturday night out

Tango (film)

Another film that I saw recently. While the choreography was stunning, the plot among different revolving characters convincing, die-hard feminists would not like the synopsis of the movie. I don't know if the men-women power dynamics is typical of Argentinian society. On the other hand, there was another dance sequence involving two men. As a result I could not go ahead and label the film sexist or chauvinist. Sometimes I don't really know how to interpret things in this movie. Let's say the overall product is more than just a passing grade, and you won't regret having spent 105 minutes on this film.

If you pay attention, the French in Canada is quite different from International French, which I wonder if it really exists.

Habana Blues

élections canadiennes

si cette fois on retourne en octobre avec un gouvernement majoritaire des conservateurs, écrit une journaliste britannique would that really be hell? Personally, I do believe minority governments get things done better than majority governments, for the party that formed the government have to really take into account of their colleagues from rival parties. The drawback however, is that an election can be called when the prime minister sees a favourable opening in the opinion polls.

credit crisis...

So the financial crisis is THAT big as a result Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley have to seek refuge and become bank holding institutions. Wow! In the older, pre-merger days, there were JP Morgan, Smith Barney, Bear Stearns, DLJ, Salomon Brothers, Dean Witter, bla bla bla... so high flying, arrogant times is over, maybe it is a good sign out of all the bad news.

Anyway, I also read somewhere (probably a Chinese web site) that the American government's bailout is like a "socialist" market methodology LOL... I guess Milton Friedman would be rolling in the grave, but I am ABSOLUTELY NO FAN of him tho.

So for any given language, regional usages lead to different ways of expressing a single idea.

Ode to the Motherland

It is empowering to see proud Chinese, or Chinese displaying their pride. If you don't understand what I meant, self-esteem for individuals in this country took a long time to rise up to where we are now. China is not an ideal place for everyone of its citizens yet but is labouring like a workhorse to improve day by day, hour by hour, minute by minute...

CERN super collider

so it is ready for action. After spending billions, the accelerator at the Franco-Suisse border will try to recreate the moment after Big Bang and see if certain particles could be produced by energy. Oh no time travel nor dangerous eat-anything-around-it black holes yet LOL... but certain scientific tidbits here do sound kinda creepy and like science fiction ;-).

not quite globalization

I was in Montreal for the past four years from 2003 to 2007. The relocation to Beijing gave me an insight into certain aspects of daily life that the world is NOT as "flat" as some people would think.

Two cases in point:

1) the fruits available for sale on the street or at the markets. The prices and variety do reflect whether a particular product is in season or not. Unlike the supermarkets in Montreal, at times you cannot really tell anymore what season it is when you look at the produce available.

So the switch from web page to blog for me, finally. This is the beginning of an interesting journey.

D'où venez-vous? Where are you from?
