more Buñuel

Apart from my earlier entry on Las Hurdes. I watched a few Buñuel flicks lately. One of them was Un Chien Andalou, which after the second or third viewing, I still cannot make out of every message the film meant to convey. Do I really have to "understand" what the film director intended for us to see, given the name Luis Buñuel equates surrealism? I have heard more than once that movies, when compared to books, make people dumber because the former is "fed" to the audience, whilst reading a book allows room for individual interpretations. Well, An Andalusian Dog really leaves us lots of room to dream on. It is entertaining to say the least!

In addition, I watched Viridiana, a film now I know why the Catholic church wanted it banned when it was released in France and Spain (don't know if it ever got to the Spanish market right the way, for from what I read it was banned in Spain for more than a few years). Par contre, l'autre film de Bunuel qui s'appelle Tristan était plus calme et moins controversé, même si par le standard à l'heure actuelle en Chine (comme j'ai vu tous ces flims à Pékin), les thèmes étaient 'croustillants'. Avant tous, plus que je vois des oeuvres de Bunuel, plus que je considère Bunuel un réalisateur genil et incroyable.

火車殺了巴士 Train killed the bus

九巴的70號巴士停駛了。這也可以說是我的童年回憶隨著都市的步伐加快而停止。其實在我讀中學的八十年代，70號的影響力已經開始放慢。那時吐露港公路剛剛啟用，快線的巴士服務漸漸搶走乘客，但是最主要的原因是火車的電氣化計劃。從1983開始，火車慢慢把新界與九龍的距離拉近。從前花一個多小時的車程縮短為三十六分鐘左右。見新聞報道 和 背景資料 或另一個寫得很詳細的博客。 So a bus route that sort of grew up with me, or vice versa is no more. Blame it on the increasing fast pace of city life in Hong Kong. The trip on No. 70 has a lot of personal spin to it. In the past my family, more often my father and I would ride from terminus to terminus (Jordan Road in Kowloon and Sheung Shui in the New Territories). Withchanging pace in Hong Kong at lightning speed, it is actually quite amazing the No. 70 bus survived so long. When I was studying in Mong Kok and living in Sheung Shui from 1984 to 1987, I took the bus sometimes, just for the fun of it, even though the train would get me home in like 40 minutes. In the very old days, early 1980s in Sheung Shui, buses arriving would have to turned onto the opposite lane and back into the "parking lot" which looked more like just a dirt pit, as it wasn't even paved with cement.

I guess the bus route witness the changing of population density, neighbourhoods, sceneries, etc. I always thought it was the longest bus route in Hong Kong, the trip itself was something, not quite a pilgrimage, but long, taking at times one and a half hours with traffic LOL. Now that it had served it purpose, like many aspects of life Hong Kong, exists only in our memories and contributes to the ever growing nostalgia. Some blog pictures on the buses are here.

Improv, Beijing style

J'ai assisté une journée, en deux parties, du théâtre improvisé aujourd'hui au théâtre Peng Hao (蓬蒿剧场) au coeur du quartier de NanLuoGuXiang. La première était une production amenée par un mise en scène taïwanais et deux acteurs pékinois. C'était une session du théâtre planifiée et improvisée, semée avec des éléments d'un atélier. La partie d'improvisation engage quelques spectateurs pour les parcours de drame. 没有剧本的话剧是颇难演的。这一次北京即兴戏剧剧场成立以来两周年有音乐，话剧表演，还有是来观看的观众也自发性地给意见，甚至参加演出。对我来说这是难度很高的表演艺术，希望将来有机会参加他们的工作坊吧。我想话剧也能令表演或参与者对这世界观有更加多反思和深入探讨。

29 Nov 2008 Beijing 北京 王庄路 派对 party

I went to this funky party last Saturday in a warehouse on 王庄路 Wang Zhuang Lu in Beijing's WuDaoKou district, a primarily university district. The warehouse seems to be a 武术学校 (school of Wushu) during the day. 在这个派对里遇上一些法国人，其中还有几个华裔的法国人。他们大部分都是学生，有一些是来北京学汉语的，另外一些则是MBA的交换生。这又是一个外国人对中国越来越感兴趣的例子。 Alors cette soirée me démontrait que ma théorie reste correcte - je peux améliorer mon français bien que j'habite à Pékin, grâce aux francophones qui s'installent ici, temporairement ou à long terme.
There were DJs playing music, graffiti artists spray-painting the wall, people busying barbequing, eating and drinking. Interestingly, I dunno if I were the only one noticing, a few mingong not associated with the party actually sneeked in and out of the premise a few times. Things happened at these kidna evnets you know. The bottom line was everyone had a hell of a good time without any ruckus!

Las Hurdes

Terre sans pain ("Las Hurdes" ou "Tierra Sin Pan") est un documentaire (il me semblait) réalisé par Luis Buñuel, cinéaste espanol. Je pensais que la production franco-espanole comme la narration a été fait en français, étonnant une folle de cinéphiles dans la grande salle pour le visionnement. L'histoire montré par cette production est vraiment triste. Les villageois qui souffrent de goitre et nourrissent mal, des conséquences de leur lieu d'habitation - une région montagneuse, isolée, etc. Ça serait amusant si l'on rendre une visite à Las Hurdes ces jours-ci.

rencontre sur Simone de Beauvoir 西门。波娃

J'ai assisté à une conférence sur Simone de Beauvoir lorsque le 100e anniversaire de sa naissance. Ce qui était intéressant pour moi est la présence d'une ancienne journaliste canadienne, Madeleine Gobeil, qui était depuis longtemps amie de couple Beauvoir/Sartre. Cette fois-ci est aussi la première fois parmi plusieurs conférences en français à Pékin qu'une invitée était canadienne. Par conséquent de cette amitié, elle a interviewé Beauvoir en 1967, devant le turbulente mai 1968, mouvement militant des étudiants français, autant que partout du monde. Elle a été décrite, comme une féministe radicale, mais elle s’est dite aussi que elle était romancière, écrivain. Selon les deux conférencières, Gobeil et écrivain/professeur Danièle Sallenave, de Beauvoir n'était jamais contradictoire elle-même. Peut-être son copain pendant plusieurs décennies, Sartre, était un peu hypocrite étant donné que ses actions et ses discours n'étaient pas sans conflit.

Par hasard, je me suis souvenu, pas pour la première fois que ma grand-mère est née dans la même année que Simone de Beauvoir. Ma grand-mère, elle, m'a aussi quitté il y a plus de vingt ans. Elle n'était pas féministe comme madame Beauvoir, elle était quand même une analphabète. Néanmoins, ma grand-mère a une impacte signifiante sur moi comme elle m'a emmené dans mes années formatives. Deux femmes nées en 1908, qui avaient vécu leurs parcours de vie totalement différent.我嫲嫲(祖母)跟西門。波娃一樣是一九零八年出生的。想起來嫲嫲已離開二十四年了，心裏是有一點感觸，大概因為她伴著我成長最初的十二個難忘的年頭。

journée de SIDA / AIDS day / 艾滋病日

êtes-vous d'accord avec ses commentaires? Franchement, les gens de l'extérieur de la région sud-asiatique, c'est-à-dire principalement des pays occidentaux, n'ont pas vraiment la compréhension sur ce sujet là. La paix dépend la justice sociale et peut-être économique. J'espère que l'on y arrive un jour!
